Ryaltris and allergic rhinitis

Ryaltris is used to treat the symptoms of moderate to severe seasonal allergic rhinitis (also called hayfever) and perennial rhinitis in adults and adolescents 12 years of age or older.1

What is the difference between seasonal and perennial rhinitis?

  • Seasonal rhinitis is an allergic reaction that happens at certain times of the year, caused by breathing in pollen from trees, grasses, weeds and also moulds and fungal spores1
  • Perennial rhinitis can happen throughout the year. Symptoms can be caused by allergens such as house-dust mites, animal hair (or dander), feathers and certain foods1

How does Ryaltris work in allergic rhinitis?

Ryaltris relieves the symptoms of allergies, like runny nose, sneezing and itchy or blocked nose.1

Ryaltris contains two active substances: olopatadine and mometasone furoate.1

Olopatadine is an antihistamine that works by preventing the effects of substances such as histamine (produced by the body as part of an allergic reaction).1

Mometasone furoate is a corticosteroid (or steroid) that works by reducing inflammation that is often found in allergic rhinitis.1

People with allergic rhinitis can experience any of the following:1

Sneezing Sneezing
Runny nose Runny nose
Itchy or blocked nose Itchy or blocked nose

How to use Ryaltris

Using Ryaltris should be simple: the recommended dose in adults and adolescents (12 years and older) is 2 sprays into each nostril, morning and night.1 However, it is important to know how to use it properly to ensure you get the most from your medicine. Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you and check with them if you are unsure. You will also find instructions in the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with every pack.

Step by step guide to using Ryaltris:

Preparing the nasal spray bottle1

  1. Shake the bottle for minimum 10 seconds and then remove the protective cap (figure 1). If using the spray for the first time, ‘prime’ the bottle by pumping into the air.
  2. Place your forefinger and middle finger either side of the nozzle and thumb underneath the bottle.
  3. Point the nozzle away, then press down and release the pump 6 times until a fine mist appears (figure 2).
  4. The pump is now primed and ready to use. If not used for 14 days or more, the bottle must be ‘re-primed’ by pumping the spray 2 times until a fine mist is produced.

How to use the fine mist nasal spray1

  1. Shake the bottle for minimum 10 seconds before each use (morning and evening).
  2. Gently blow your nose to clear the nostrils.
  3. Hold the bottle firmly with your index and middle finger on either side of the spray nozzle unit (on finger rests) while supporting the grooved base of the bottle with your thumb.
  4. Close one nostril with your finger and carefully insert the spray tip into the other nostril, pointing it slightly toward the outside of the nose (figure 3).
  5. Tilt your head forward slightly. Press down once time quickly and firmly on the finger rests to activate the pump.
  6. Breathe in (inhale) gently through your nose as you spray. Then breathe out through your mouth (figure 4).
  7. Repeat the above steps and deliver a second spray in the same nostril.
  8. Repeat with 2 sprays in the other nostril.

After using Ryaltris, wipe the nozzle carefully with a clean handkerchief or tissue and replace the cap, to avoid the nozzle getting blocked.1

Cleaning your Ryaltris nasal spray1

If the nozzle gets blocked, follow these steps:

  • Remove the cap and gently pull off the nozzle
  • Remove the purple dust cap and place only the spray nozzle unit in warm water to soak
  • Do not try to unblock the nasal applicator by inserting a pin or other sharp object, as this will damage the applicator and cause you not to get the right dose of medicine
  • After soaking the spray nozzle tip for 15 minutes, rinse the spray nozzle unit and purple dust cap with warm water and allow them to dry completely
  • Push the nozzle back onto the bottle and replace the cap
  • The spray will need to be primed again with 2 sprays when first used after cleaning (see above for how to do this)

Frequently asked questions1

How do I store Ryaltris?

As with all medicines, keep Ryaltris out of the sight and reach of children. Ensure you don’t use it after the expiry date shown on the bottle and carton, and use within 2 months of first opening.

Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use.

Does Ryaltris have any side effects?

Like all medicines, Ryaltris can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Common side effects (that may affect up to 1 in 10 people) are a bitter taste in your mouth, a nosebleed, and slight irritation of the inside of the nose. If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. More information on side effects is available in the Patient Information Leaflet.

Side effects reporting

What if I take more Ryaltris than I should?

You are unlikely to have any problems but if you’re worried or if you have used doses higher than recommended over a long period, contact your doctor. If you use steroids for a long time or in large amounts they may rarely affect some of your hormones. In children this may affect growth and development.

What if I forget to take Ryaltris?

Take it as soon as you remember, then take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

What about other medications I may be taking?

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any medicines you are taking, have recently taken or might take. If you are taking other medicines by oral or local route (nasal or eye drops) containing olopatadine or other antihistamines, your doctor may advise you to stop taking them once you begin using Ryaltris®. Some medicines may increase the effects of Ryaltris® and your doctor may wish to monitor you carefully if you are taking these medicines (including some medicines for HIV: ritonavir, cobicistat).
